Westbourne Primary School ECO PROJECT
Eco School Report May 2010

Greenday
On Friday 30th April, we held our first Green day at Westbourne Primary School. Our aim was to raise awareness of climate change, our contribution to saving energy and raise some funds to buy plants for the wildlife area.
During the assembly members of the PTA awarded prizes to the logo winners from each class First prize went to Gabriella Mula whose logo was used on all the promotional material by the Greening Westbourne group.
The assembly was very lively; everyone wore green and watched a presentation about switching off electricity and saving power. We also looked at the insulated houses that the children had made for the competition.
After which the children returned to their classrooms, some making insulated houses and others Trash Fashion outfits, for the fashion show.
During the afternoon we switched off power for an hour and finally watched the maypole team prepare for the fair on Saturday.
A huge amount of recycled toys, games and books were donated for the fair and altogether £100.00 was raised during the day.
The whole event was really enjoyable and brings us one step closer to our Green Flag status.

We have been an Eco school for at least 2 years.  So far we have built a wild life area, replaced the lights, we’ve watched the energy consumption and we have a litter policy.  We went to Birdham School to think of new ideas for our school.

First we went to the Bourne International Centre. We did a presentation of our school.  We heard 5 other schools give presentations too.  Afterwards we did activities which included team work.  It was fun to meet other children from our area.

Our second meeting of the cluster took place at Birdham School.  The first thing we saw was the Celtic round house.  They used it for reading, writing, poetry and studying the Celts.  Then we saw the orchard, it was full of fruit which included apples, plums, pears and cherries.  They used the fruit to make jam.  Then we saw the outside stage.  We thought this was a good idea.  We may use this idea in future for assemblies and performances.  We saw the river and eco centre, vegetable patch and swimming pool.

The river was amazing it had its own bird watch house and was full of nature.  It had a bridge and we could see wildlife from the bridge.

The eco centre was most important for our school it had eco friendly toilets which the headmaster was very proud of.  It was made by solar panels.  Inside the centre were eco friendly computers and activities.

The swimming pool was heated by solar panels.  It is so hot inside the enclosure of the swimming pool they grow vegetables!

All in all this was a good trip and we have good new ideas for our school.

We have been an eco school at least 2 years.  So far we have created a wildlife area.  We have been making sure we don’t use too much energy.  We have cleared up most of our litter.  We went to Birdham School to get more ideas.

First we went to the Bourne International Centre.  We did a presentation about what we have done.  We heard 5 other schools do a presentation.  Afterwards we did lots of activities that needed team work.  It was fun to meet other children from our area.

Our second meeting of the cluster took place at Birdham School.  The first thing we saw was the orchard.  It was full of fruit which included plums, pears and cherries which they used to make jam.

Then we saw the outside stage.  We thought it was a good idea.  We may use this idea in the future.  We would use it for assemblies and shows.

Lastly we saw the lake and eco centre, it was really good.

ECO Report 2009
We have carried out a whole school environmental review and have developed an action plan as a result. Having shared this plan with members of the school community, the warriors are now tackling their biggest challenge, to create a wildlife area.
This will be a long term project, creating various habitats, so that the area becomes a haven for birds, insects and pond life.
Bird feeders, fat balls and 2 insect houses have also been added and this is already attracting wildlife.
We have applied for a B and Q grant for funding towards the wildlife area and we hope to get money for plants, trees tools and maybe even a shed.
The wildlife area is looking really lovely at the moment with spring bulbs coming through.
The children are enjoying using the area and can often be seen spotting birds with binoculars and looking in the bark and under logs for insects.
Mrs Daddow, one of our parents who is also a Warrior is kindly running 2 gardening clubs. She is encouraging the children to tend the plants and look after the grounds.
Meanwhile Year 2 are beginning to use their grow beds to plant vegetables and flowers.

Sustainability
Having undergone a sustainability assessment from WSCC plans are now in place to consider the option of solar panels to reduce our energy costs. A feasibility study is being done.
The swimming pool may also benefit from this study.
We have lowered our energy consumption and hope to become more sustainable in the future.

Westbourne Primary School - Eco Warrior Report - 2009/10

Our Eco team have had a very busy year in 2009 and have taken part in various events in the village, including the Greening Fair and the Open Garden Event.

Our latest projects include preparation for Green Flag and taking part in the Locality Cluster events- visiting other schools and developing our grounds and green issues.

We have taken part in the Tree O’clock BBC tree planting event on December 5th, planting a free rowan tree donated by the BBC.

Also through the Woodland Trust we have ordered a free copse of 30 trees as part of a tree planting event in March 2010.

The Shredding event in the village on January 3rd 2010 was a great success and was well attended by many children and families from Westbourne Primary School. The chippings have been spread in the wildlife area by the Infants on the 5th January 2010. The Christmas card collection which started in the square will continue at school- also organised by The Woodland Trust and Marks and Spencer.

Over the next few weeks we will be preparing for the Green Flag application and working towards insulating the school – The Greening Westbourne focus for 2010.

Greening Fair
Despite continuous rain the Greening fair was held on the school field. It started with a very noisy procession from the square, following the giant logo designed by Gabriella.
The various stalls were busy and there was a steady stream of visitors enjoying refreshments. The recycling stall run by the Eco warriors was a great success raising over £80.00.
The maypole dance team were excellent, finally having to dance in the hall because of the downpours!
After that we held the Trash fashion show, luckily outside when the rain eased off.
The outfits were very imaginative and carried the message of insulation very clearly. The winners were Mia from Year 4 and Larissa from Year 2.
The weather could not dampen the spirits and the 2nd Greening fair was an overall success.
