To become a member of the Good Companions you need to be 60 years old or more. Held fortnightly on a Thursday afternoon at the Westbourne Social Club in River Street, the organisation has up to 50 members, paying a subscription fee of £2 a year.
The club was founded some 48 years ago by Mrs Freeland and Mrs Coasby. Its present treasurer, Ken Ross, took over from Dorothy Williamson who joined in 1980 and, in his words, ‘to all intents and purposes ran the club for twenty four years’.
Activities include bingo, a raffle, afternoon tea and the occasional talk. Ken also organises monthly outings and, as a founder of the Ems Valley Community Transport, has no difficulty in arranging how to get there and back.
