Westbourne Parish Council Newsletter

Welcome

We would like to update you on the activities of YOUR PARISH COUNCIL. This sheet will be in the December and June editions of the Parish Magazine each year and on the Village Website.

Your views and suggestions are always welcome at our monthly meetings in the Baptist Hall [ see the Village Diary or the notice board outside “Libby’s Café for dates and times ]

20’s Plenty
To increase the safety of families in Westbourne walking on narrow pavements and crossing the road, a campaign has been started to create a road safety culture where road traffic are encouraged to slow down to 20 miles an hour around the village and the school.

Hundreds of signatures of support have been obtained and a local residents group has now been set up to progress this further into a reality, as in Portsmouth.

With the support of Customer Services Officers from the West Sussex County Council’s Rural Team this project is moving on rapidly.

Public Services

The recent refurbishment and cleaning of the finger sign posts around Westbourne will enable our visitors to find their way.

Parish Councillors are also looking into the possibility of having a community notice board in the village.

Please see article on the other side of this page for information on the Westbourne Emergency Plan.

Recreation and Amenities

A great deal of work has been has done on the Recreation Ground at Monks Hill including picnic tables and chairs which will enable more families to use this facility.

Development
at Hampshire Farm

Your Parish Councillors are monitoring the
development at Hampshire Farm and are ensuring that the contractors are fulfilling their contractual duties with additional reserved plans being agreed. The issue of large vehicles taking the Long Copse Lane route is being addressed.

The Parish Council will be carefully monitoring any other planning applications for housing development in Westbourne which are logged with the District Council.

Emergency Plan

In April 2010, an Emergency Plan for Westbourne was drawn up by the Parish Council. West Sussex County Council advises that all local councils possess such a document and keep it up to date. It is easy to think "Emergencies don't happen here," but as we saw with the recent flooding incident at Emsworth, surprising things can indeed happen. With predictions of unusual weather, our feeling is "better safe than sorry."

Because of this we are currently updating our Emergency Plan, and including a local winter management plan as well as measures for dealing with potential flooding. These seem to be the emergencies most likely to affect the people of Westbourne.

As we are sure you will understand, putting together such a plan is no small undertaking. It will rely very much on local knowledge, both from people who've lived in Westbourne for some time and those who are comparatively new to the village. We need a plan that will cover real-life emergencies and is really practical and known to most people. Your Parish Councillors are more than willing to take the lead when it comes to co-ordinating in an emergency, but we depend on your help to make the emergency plan an effective one.

Please contact us if:

you know of anything that you feel should be included in the Emergency Plan
you would like to be added to a list of people who can be called upon to assist in the event of an emergency
you have any particular equipment or skills that could prove useful in an emergency
you know of anybody in the parish who might need special assistance in the event of an emergency. This includes yourself and members of your immediate family
